Cultivate Film Club here in Manchester is perhaps the city’s best kept cultural secret. In 2014, they hosted around 50 free, diversely programmed double-bills ranging from video nasty (Cannibal Holocaust/Straw Dogs) to philosophical, existential horror (The Addiction, Santa Sangre) & from the seminal cinema (I Am Cuba, Marketa Lazarova) to perception altering docs (House I Live In, Paris Is Burning). Week in- week out, you know you’re in for a real treat. A great place for lovers of cinema to meet and discuss of just be one of those wonderful people out there in the dark.
A personal highlight and a testament to the kind of event we just don’t get anywhere else in Manchester, the rather excellent pairing of Rowan Woods’ THE BOYS and David Michód’s ANIMAL KINGDOM. A modern cult classic preceded by it’s spiritual & thematic forebear. Devastating, engaging cinema… A memorable experience for anyone who attended.
The future of cinema lies in this kind of programming. Bravo Cultivate, long may you continue.
