Grimm Up North present a brand new season of films at Manchester Central Library surrounding the nightmares and angst of American Suburban life!

American Beauty is the 1999 critically acclaimed american suburban dark comedy, directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes (Skyfall), written by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) and starring Kevin Spacey, Annette Benning & Thora Birch. The film centers on Lester, Him and his wife Carolyn are on the outside, a perfect husband and wife, in a perfect house, in a perfect neighborhood. But inside, Lester is slipping deeper and deeper into a hopeless depression. He finally snaps when he becomes infatuated with one of his daughter’s friends. Meanwhile, his daughter Jane is developing a happy friendship with Ricky, the strange boy next door, who is a drug dealer & documentarian who lives under a roof governed by a very strict marine father and a speechless mother. Each film screening in this series will begin with a lecture around the film and its themes of american suburban angst.
