The Skin I live In owes a great deal to Franju’s film Eyes Without A Face. Stylistically, speaking Almodovar’s borrows that mixture of lyricism and ghastly that makes the former an innovative approach to the horror genre. However Almodovar’s inspiration on Franju’s film allows him also to develop his personal views that are in accordance with the mosty typical “Almodovar Universe” In terms of the plot, The Skin I live in stress that lethal combination of love an obsession: A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession. However Almodovar’s trademarks are there : The love for women characters, the impeccable photography, the use of a rich colour palette and a strong plot plague with intentional ambiguity.
This is an stunning film highly recommended.
