Big Father, Small Father & Other Stories | Dir. Phan Đăng Di | 100mins | Vietnam | 2015
Tropical Malady is a film of astonishing lyric power that explores, in myth and reality, the nature of love. A film in two segments – the first a romance between two men, and the second a mysterious tale about a soldier lost in the woods, bedeviled by the spirit of a tiger shaman. Tropical Malady won the 2004 Jury prize at Cannes and is now highly critically acclaimed for it’s lush and haunting imagery. Initially at Cannes however some viewers were so frustrated by it’s mysterious abstract nature and slower pacing that they left or booed the film.
