Nepotism is alive and well in Hollywood
I had no idea that M. Night Shyamalan had directed this film until I saw his name pop up on the closing credits. That’s because the film has a simple, cookie cutter feel to it, with a look familiar from at least a dozen other recent Hollywood movie and nothing in the way of originality in terms of voice or angle to make it stand out.
It’s not that this is completely awful, it’s just that it’s so, well, undemanding. Will Smith and his real-life son Jaden play a father and son (surprise) who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Will is injured, so he sends his kid out to activate a homing beacon and thus enable their rescue. Along the way, the boy becomes a man.
It all sounds very sentimental and rather sickening and it is. Jaden Smith is no actor and never has been, but he has made a career of hanging on to his father’s coat-tails and that’s the case here. Will Smith is a little better, but he seems to be coasting along too. The constant CGI is very boring, and when you discover that the antagonists are rubbishy CGI beasties along the lines of 10,000 BC, well that’s the time that you stop caring.
A lot better than expected, goes up and down
I watched this film only now because of the many negative reviews. After watching it I can say that I understand why they hated, but that it hardly affected the film. Let me explain.
This is a Smith-Pinkett movie. It was produced by the families of both members of the couple, the story was written by Will and the main actor is their kid. I can understand why people would get upset for watching a movie that was probably a kid’s birthday wish someday. That being said, I don’t think Jaden’s inexperience really hurt the movie. Instead, what was wrong with it were the dialogs and some aspects of the story.
The film has some very good things going for it… and some very bad. I liked the design of the film. Also the concept of the Rangers, as a military force trained to save civilian asses, a bit like in Starship Troopers or maybe even the Seafort saga (please, please, please start making movies based on it!). I also liked the idea that it happened on Earth, after humans have evacuated it. The concept of the inexperienced rookie going through it all with only his father’s guidance as help as somewhat ironic, given the circumstances, but also a very nice concept. I totally liked Will Smith’s acting in this. His role is not like his usual ones at all, and he did it perfectly. He seemed to channel Samuel L. Jackson when he gets all cool and intense.
But then there are the bad things. Will Smith is some hot shot general and his son is trying his best to graduate as a Ranger to please his dad. After seeing how he reacts to situations and orders in this film, though, he must have not trained at all. And you cannot blame Jaden Smith, because this was written in the script, including the raging fits and stupid dialogs. Also, the aliens that humans are fighting are not attacking with big interstellar ships, instead they are randomly dropping zerlings and letting them eat people. The most silly biological weapon of all, it can only detect humans if they smell afraid. So a hazmat suit could solve the entire issue of alien attach… Adding to it the implausible scenario of randomly crashing into Earth and the completely artificial threats there (flash freezes? in the jungle?), you get a uselessly overstuffed scenario that forcefully pulls the viewer from his suspension of disbelief. And that cutlass or spear or whatever it was… the hell, even a Jaffa staff seemed a better weapon.
So, my suggestion is that this film had some very good basic concepts. Just removing some useless plot devices and annoying scenes and making it about a crash on a jungle planet would have been enough to make this film very attractive. Some more background on the situation of the world and on the Rangers instead of the ridiculous dialog about mass expansion of the asteroid storms or lame alien bioweapons that don’t see you when you enter Equilibrium mode would have done wonders with this. Choosing a rookie actor as the main character just when his voice is breaking out wasn’t the best idea possible, but the kid was perfect for the role that was written in the script. Put anybody else in his stead and he would still come off as annoying and without much self control, because that is the character!
Bottom line: almost every problem in this film could have been easily remedied. With a little imagination you can make those changes in your head. What is left is a lot of good ideas that work well. Not at all as bad as described by hate mongers.
