Blood Alley : The Duke and Bacall need I say more !!
A really cool movie and John Wayne doing what he does best, killing commies and seducing Lauren Bacall. The on location look to it really sells it though, it doesn’t feel like just a generic studio movie, it looks like they’re in China. It’s interesting that John Wayne co-directed this at such an early time to, it’s a great job for a first movie or a seasoned director. All around it’s just a fun semi-war movie with some interesting early views on communism.

The Duke gets mean
John Wayne has played other mean guys (Red River and The Searchers for example) but none of them are meaner than he is in “Blood River”. Those other two guys were mean and dangerous but in “Blood Alley” Duke’s character is mean, dangerous and half a nut-job. He’s a great character and John Wayne does a great job playing him. It took me a few viewings to really appreciate “Blood Alley” but now I’m all on board. I really enjoyed watching “Blood Alley” tonight. It can come off a little dated if you’re not paying attention. There’s a lot of rough stuff going on. On the big screen it must have a great experience watching “Blood Alley”. As soon as my time machine is perfected, I’m going back to 1955 so I can see this movie in the theater.
