Plot: “Bulletproof” observes the age-old rituals that take place daily in American schools: homecoming parades, basketball practice, morning announcements, and math class. Unfolding alongside these scenes are an array of newer traditions: lockdown drills, teacher firearm trainings, metal detector inspections, and school safety trade shows. This documentary weaves together these moments in a cinematic meditation on fear, violence, and the meaning of safety, bringing viewers into intimate proximity with the people self-tasked with protecting the nation’s children while generating revenue along the way, as well as with those most deeply impacted by these heightened security measures: students and teachers.

My probably biased opinion
As a former-NRA member who has watched their leadership devolve to where it has been working hard to have more guns sold and pushing for more of a police state while at the same time pushing for people to have more guns. I did cancel my membership. What followed after that was another issue but to get to the point. As one school administrator asked. What message does it send to our kids when schools need armed guards who are ready to shoot to protect kids and the school property instead of setting the example for them and showing life skills they can use to de-escalate issues or possibly resolve them. It puts the use of guns first is what it does.
Our children will take the lessons and example they learn from adults around them. Is this the way to develop a better society and create better citizens? I fear not.
When most of the security guards are not under the school’s control but under the control of city, county, or private hands the school system already loses control right there.
When this madness of creating fortifications within our school systems only means more profit to business’s selling weapons, security systems, and training personal and providing the body armor and everything else that goes with it, it creates a loop of more violence in the long run. Even if it is simply the kids taking in what adults take to handle situations.
Yes, there should be some level of security nearby for situations that require it but it does not need to be in the school in the face of the kids and teachers.
Let educators focus on education and not have them to also have to worry about security.
What our country needs to take a hard look at is why we have so many guns and why we have states making it easier to get guns and carry them anyplace while at the same time trying to restrict voting rights.
I am an Independent voter by the way and I have seen my share of wars and death for my country.
