Reviews:

I’ve never read _Cell_, so I’m not sure if this is an accurate adaptation of a bad Stephen King book, or just another inaccurate adaptation of a Stephen King book. But either way, it’s bad.

For a decent Cusack/Jackson team up in a King adaptation, just watch 1408.

Final rating:★½: – Boring/disappointing. Avoid if possible.

Brain Cell or Brain Drain?

Well I haven’t read the book but I like Stephen King, I like John Cusack and I like Samuel Jackson, so Cell seemed like a good choice for a late night cerebral chiller. How far off was I? As it happens, very!

Suddenly cell phones are turning the populace into crazed homicidal maniacs, a small band of survivors try to stay alive and figure out what is going on…

It starts off promisingly, with whirls of chaotic violence and blood, but it then turns into a travelogue movie where everybody either looks bored or is clearly doing it for the money. There’s some good ideas at work but the film never delivers on its promise, even serving up an ending that defies patience as well as logic. Being vague is a good thing if the pay off is worth the wait, unfortunately that isn’t the case here. Epic fail and the actors and audience deserve better. 3/10

King really “phoned it in” with this story. Do you get it? Do you? DO YOU GET IT?
Yet another film in which Cusack’s stupid hat does better acting than he does. In the first few minutes we learn that Cusack is a hack-writer & the type of father who randomly disappears from his family to have affairs for a year at a time & then randomly turns back up demanding to see the family whenever he feels like it. So right from the start, we know he is a POS & it is impossible to sympathize with him or care about his fate. Phones act up. Everybody goes crazy. Cusack & Sam Jackson make it to the relative safety of his apartment & find another survivor a young female. Since the movie can’t be about these people sensibly surviving in relative safety, Cusack decides that now the need to intrude on the family he previously deserted is URGENT (why? no reason. just go with it.), and he also convinces the other two idiots to shun safety & go after his family with him (again, why? no reason). During these moronic movements of “plot”, we are also treated to scenes of mindless paternalistic BS such as Sam forbidding the youngish female from smoking by taking cigarettes from her hand while saying “NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.” as if speaking to a dog or a toddler, then proceeding to smoke the cigarettes himself. They also desert Cusack’s lovable & devoted cat in the apartment to starve to death alone while they go on this fool’s errand of battling zombies to go & hassle the family Cusack blithely abandoned a year ago. Also, the most important thing you need to know about all of this, in case the movie doesn’t beat you over the head with it enough, is: Stephen King does not like cellphones, he thinks they have turned everybody into zombies. That’s deep social commentary, isn’t it? Do you get it? See, because it’s important for you to know cellphones are bad, do you get it? DO YOU? DO YOU GET IT??? Also, he thinks young ladies should not be allowed to smoke, because his daughter Naomi smokes, so now he shoehorns the message that “IT IS IMPROPER FOR YOUNG LADIES TO SMOKE!” into all of his books & films. If you still want to watch this film go ahead. I can’t spoil the ending for you because I got tired of my intelligence being insulted after 25 minutes. Good luck.

This isn’t the best zombie horror movie you will ever see but it’s an above average addition to the genre
Cell (2016) is a movie I recently watched for free off Tubi and is based on the Stephen King novel. The storyline is about a zombie apocalyptic society due to a virus that spreads via cell phones. Those that survive scramble to stay safe while investigating which of their loves ones survived also. This movie is directed by Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) and stars John Cusack (Say Anything), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), Clark Sarullo (Anchorman 2), Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) and Stacy Keach (Escape from LA). I read this book when it first came out and loved the story and hated the ending (like so many King books). I actually think I liked this ending in this movie better than the book’s ending. I loved the characters, who were easy to relate to, and I loved the storyline which was unique in its own way. The zombies were also different from other zombie storylines. Overall this isn’t the best zombie horror movie you will ever see but it’s an above average addition to the genre that is worth a viewing. Overall I do recommend giving this a peak and would score it a 6.5-7/10.
