In this dystopian world, humans have been incapable of reproducing for eighteen years for an unknown reason, meaning the imminent extinction of the species. Britain is the one remaining civilized society on the planet, which has resulted in people wanting to immigrate there. As such, it has become a police state in order to handle the immigrants, who are placed into refugee camps. Lowly government bureaucrat Theo Faron, once an activist, is approached by the Fishes, deemed a terrorist group, led by his ex-wife Julian Taylor, who he has not seen in close to twenty years, their marriage which disintegrated following the death of their infant son Dylan during the 2008 flu pandemic. Although the Fishes did use terrorist means in their on-going revolution against the state in the fight for immigrant rights, Julian vows that they now garner support solely by speaking to the people. What she wants is for Theo to use his connections to get transit papers for a young immigrant woman named Kee who needs to get to the coast. Although initially reluctant to do it because of the difficulty, Theo is able to grant Julian this favor, however with the change that he now needs to accompany Kee on her journey. As Theo and Kee progress on that journey, Theo learns more and more about what’s going on, including the reason that Kee needs to get to the coast, the fact that no one in the group knows if their end destination even exists, and that his and Kee’s lives are in greater danger than he believed when they started the journey. But Theo’s sole mission becomes to help Kee at any cost for the survival of the species.
Plot: In 2027, in a chaotic world in which humans can no longer procreate, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea, where her child’s birth may help scientists save the future of humankind.

**Thought provoking piece of art !!**

**CHILDREN OF MEN**….How a baby’s cry can make the whole world stop, the bullets stop flying in a war, people forget all their pain, the only thing that matters is how to make that precious gift of god smile again..The movie depicts it beautifully! When the world is falling apart, coming to its end, how a THEO does things that he otherwise would have not done for anything or anybody else…It doesn’t seems practical that how at every point of time there is somebody to see them sail through, but that is all LIFE is about…HOPE…There’s a THEO in everyone of us…It’s in our hands…to choose, THEO or Luke…The world will surely end someday but till then we must all protect the CHILDREN OF MEN, protect the world…Do our bit for the mother earth..!!

**P.S. – loved the laughter of the babies in the end!!**

Scenes I LOVED –

1. When Julian was shot.
2. When Theo thought Jasper was dead.
3. When Dylan was born.
4. When Theo said to Luke “It’s a GIRL”
5. When Marichka expressed she isn’t coming.

There may be more, but these are all I remembered.

Michael Caine was adorable as always, Julianne Moore was pretty, Clive Owen was perfect, Kee was sweet, Miriam was, don’t know, clean…at heart !

Cuaron’s masterpiece so far (including Gravity, which was gravely miscast). This film is: a) easily the best film of the decade of the 2000’s; b) the finest dystopia film since ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and probably the best sci-fi since ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’; and c) all the evidence you need that Clive Owen should have been selected as James Bond in place of Daniel Craig. Heartily recommended to anyone interested in how great both science fiction and cinema can possibly be. You may be depressed with the state of both the world and mankind, after watching it, but you won’t be disappointed in the possibilities of cinema.

Amazing Film. Truly fantastic! Mindblowing…
I’ve seen this film and let me tell everyone that it was one of the most pleasurable surprises I’ve ever had with a film. I hadn’t heard about it before and it totally took me by surprise. It blew me away and left me speechless. The acting is excellent by most of the actors, but Michael Caine deserves to receive a special mention for his amazing portrait of the old hippie Jasper. His performance is fantastic and he totally stole the show in the scenes he was in. Claire Hope is also fantastic in the role of Kee. Her performance is quite impressive, especially considering this is one of her first films. Clive Owen is also great as the reluctant hero who sees his life turned upside down and is given a huge responsibility. I’ve seen him in some other films and he’s at his best here. A very good performance, you could feel what he was going through. In the technical aspects the film was brilliant, particularly Alfonso Cuarón’s strong and consistent direction that is one of the best things in the film, and contributes a lot to its quality. Also director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki does wonders with images and there are some extremely beautiful shots all done in a naturalistic way, natural lighting, etc. It’s an extremely well crafted film that makes you go through the emotional struggle the characters go through and makes you feel that you’re in the middle of it all. Besides, it’s also an extremely touching story that certainly touched my heart. One of the best films I’ve ever seen without any doubt.

Not With A Whimper.
There’s a remarkable long Steadicam shot in which the camera follows the hero, Clive Owen, through a raging battle — buildings being blown up, bullets pinging around him — and into a doorway and up a flight of stairs and through room after room until he finds what he’s searching for — the first woman to become pregnant in eighteen years.

Owen, and some supporters who come and go, are trying to get this pregnant African stranger to an offshore haven where, biology permitting, the human race will begin to reproduce itself again. I was unable to figure out how one baby will save the species.

Neither is the reason for the pandemic infertility ever explained but it doesn’t really matter much. It’s basically a chase movie. Owen and his charge don’t have many friends. It’s a Hobbesian war of all against all. London is a wreck. The ruins are filled with refugees from other countries, each eagerly killing one another, shouting slogans, waving their AK-47s over their heads. The air is filled with gun fire. A pox on all their houses; a midline granuloma!

As a chase movie it’s pretty good, carrying a powerful emotional message. The gravid woman, who is quite ordinary, is a Life Force, kind of like Zorba the Greek. I guess that’s intended to be good, and it is if you ignore certain inconvenient facts. (The tubercle bacillus has a Life Force too.) It’s also easy to read a religious lesson in it. None of that’s necessary though. It’s tense and tautly constructed, even if it doesn’t make much sense. The refugees have no one they can trust and few are anxious to help them. The best seem to lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

I am, though, getting tired of this photographic conceit in which the sun never shines, everyone is grimy and greasy, it’s either drizzling or looks about to, every object has an unhappy greenish tinge, and all the men need a shave. Enough already. I also have to wag my finger because there are plenty of dogs in the movie but no cats. My cat, Ajax the Lesser, pointed this out to me. Outside of a dog, a cat is a man’s best friend. Inside a dog, it’s too dark to see.

There is also a kind of paradox built into the movie. The only hope for mankind is a return to fertility. Yet what we see of mankind doesn’t reflect well upon it. With all social niceties being eliminated, there seems to be nothing left of government but a horde of uniformed murderous fascists. Judge Learned Hand said, “A society in which men recognize no check on their freedom soon becomes a society where freedom is the possession of only a savage few.” In this world, everyone appears intent on killing everyone else in order to be among the savage few.

The writers should have challenged some of their own assumptions. Look at what Homo sapiens has accomplished — in 2027 and now. Do we really want to start it all over again? Is the Earth better off for our presence on it?
