Seth has never been human and so has never experienced touch or taste. When in the hospital however he comes across Dr. Maggie Rice, a brilliant young heart surgeon who is devoted to her profession and her patients. Seth has the power to let himself be seen but Maggie finds him far too mysterious. Seth also meets a patient, Nathaniel Messinger, who has news for him – he too was once an angel like Seth but chose to fall to Earth and become human. Seth makes a decision on his future, which does not turn out as he had expected.
Plot: When guardian angel Seth – who invisibly watches over the citizens of Los Angeles – becomes captivated by Maggie, a strong-willed heart surgeon, he ponders trading in his pure, otherworldly existence for a mortal life with his beloved. The couple embarks on a tender but forbidden romance spanning heaven and Earth.

Everytime I hear Iris by Goo Goo Dolls I’ll always think of Nic Cage!

_**What goes on “behind the scenes”?**_

Released in 1998, “City of Angels” is a drama/fantasy/romance starring Nicolas Cage as a literal angel in Los Angeles named Seth who’s assigned to bring the dead to God and other duties. During one of his assignments he meets and becomes intrigued by a surgeon (Meg Ryan) and wonders what it would be like to be human. Andre Braugher is on hand as Seth’s angel friend while Dennis Franz plays a human in whom Seth seems to have an affinity. Will Seth “fall to the earth”?

I saw this when I was younger and it didn’t have much of an impact, although I liked it. Viewing it at an older age definitely heightened my appreciation and shows that this is a movie for mature people (regardless of age). It skillfully touches on heavy issues of which younger people don’t particularly dwell.

Based on the 1987 Euro film “Wings of Desire,” everything depends on if the film can convince the viewer that the angels are real and believable in the context of the story. It does so convincingly with a tone similar to “Meet Joe Black,” which was released the same year as “City of Angels” (later); and maybe 1990’s “Ghost.” If you like these two movies you will definitely appreciate “City.”

I don’t want to say anything more because it’s better that you watch the movie and discover its potential riches for yourself. The script is well thought out, although they didn’t milk the ending for all its potential, plus it seemed rather rushed, not to mention there are some glaring theological holes. Regardless, this is a nigh spiritual masterpeace. (No, I didn’t misspell that).

The film runs 114 minutes and was shot in Los Angeles, Malibu, Big Bear Lake, Lake Tahoe and the San Francisco Public Library, California.

The first accurate OR scene I’ve ever seen
There’s just one point I want to make about this movie, and that’s about the OR scene when they’re doing a coronary bypass. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a correct movie rendition of it, it’s usually a baroque farce, but not here. Every instrument I could see, the bypass machine, the aortic cannula, the headlamps, the ECG monitors (and the traces!), the orders given, the type of suture, were correct (except I suspect they chose a heavier suture than normal 7-0, since a 7-0 would be very hard to see, it looked more like 4-0 or 5-0). Even the tying of knots, the Joule strengths used for defibrillation, the lidocaine dosages, the body temperature during bypass, the kind of mag the bypass operator is reading, the music (except we had Bach, country & western, Dylan or Cat Stevens, depending on surgeon and how the procedure was going), the time it will take to reprime the pump to get back on cardiac bypass again; I found not one single error! There’s this one moment when everyone looks under the table, which is weird, but then Meg Ryan leaves the table, so even that is OK from a sterility point of view. I don’t know if other people care, but this kind of care for detail makes a movie a lot more enjoyable for me.

Oh, one more remark: the reanimation with internal cardiac massage is a bit short, they give up a bit too soon. But that’s exactly what she blames herself for, later.

Unexpected love. One of Meg Ryan’s better performances.
Meg Ryan. For a while Ms. Ryan was the number one female movie star and in this movie she is at her best. She carries this movie, makes this movie not only watchable but enjoyable as her character goes on an emotional roller coaster ride, at times crying, other times consumed with joy as she struggles with life issues. Nicholas Cage plays a great straight man to Ms. Ryan and demonstrates a talent for maintaining a deadpan expression during even the most fantastic and intimate scenes, but this is Ms Ryan’s movie and she makes the most of it. The story itself is somewhat contrived and at times becomes overtly sentimental as the two main characters reach out to each other, one believing that she is alone, the other trying to make a connection. Yet the movie successfully avoids corniness and maintains an even keel as she plies through the waves of emotion. Oh love, what a joy, made even more sweet when it happens unexpected.
