Synopsis

A few nights later, a walking sea monster tangles with the fishing boats and enters the town. The salvage vessel captures Gorgo and takes it to London for display. Gorgo’s mother, who is upset and significantly larger follows his trail to London leaving a wake of destruction in her path.
Plot: When an undersea volcano sends tremors throughout the Atlantic, aquatic creatures come out of hiding. Merchant seamen Joe Ryan and partner Sam Slade harness the most unusual of the lot, a massive beast that looks like a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The enterprising sailors deliver their quarry to a British circus, but it turns out that the animal is a newborn. And, when his much larger mother arrives in London to rescue her son, the city feels her wrath.

Reviews:

Britain’s answer to King Kong and Godzilla.
British creature feature Gorgo borrows heavily from King Kong, its gargantuan monster shipped to Blighty where it is put on display for the paying public (the giant reptile billed as ‘The 8th Wonder of the World’ – sound familiar?). The creature itself is a rip-off of Godzilla, the design less impressive (silly flapping frills on its head and glowing red eyes), but the destruction that follows its capture easily on a par with, if not better than, its more famous Japanese relation.

The film begins on board a ship moored off the coast of Ireland, the crew looking for treasure on a sunken vessel. Volcanic activity on the sea floor damages their ship (which is thrown around like a toy in a bath-tub – probably because that is what it is), but also releases a prehistoric monster, which proves far more valuable than any salvage. Capturing the beast, the men set sail for London where a circus promotes the reptile as Gorgo! Unfortunately, Gorgo is not a one-of-kind find: he is, in fact, merely an infant, and his 200ft tall mother isn’t very happy about her kid being turned into a sideshow attraction.

Although highly derivative, Gorgo – directed by Eugène Lourié (Behemoth the Sea Monster) – is still a lot of fun for fans of B-movie monsters, the film making up for it’s lack of originality with its impressive scenes of destruction. Ignore the fact that Gorgo and its mum are shonky ‘man in rubber suit’ style monsters (and try, if you can, to ignore the obligatory cute kid) and just enjoy the mayhem, which sees Tower Bridge demolished, Big Ben toppled, and Picadilly Circus stomped. The visual effects for the chaos are actually well handled and not many of the buildings being crushed look like balsa wood models – some effort has clearly been made to make the masonry look and feel like the real deal. The scenes of panic in the streets of London (hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ) are also well orchestrated.

6/10. Worth seeing, particularly for the sight of Gorgo being driven through London on a flatbed truck – that must’ve been fun to see in real life!
