How long does it take to lay down a layer of bull****? 1 hr and 44 min
This movie is immoral and an attempt at subverting science. A computer scientist who thinks he knows geology. “Scientists” who forgot all about the scientific process and are trying to reconcile their belief in a fantasy, made up in an era when people thought thunderstorms were caused by angry gods. Believing something and saying you believe it doesn’t make it true. Maybe the producers could try asking those actual scientists why they theorize what they do, and have a look at their evidence. Standing around looking at one location on earth and only commenting on one aspect of that landscape is not real science. And sorry fake scientists, face the fact that you’re gonna die some day and stop greedily trying to extend your life into the afterlife. After your dead, your chance to live is over and it’s time to make room for younger beings to live.
Beware: All Smoke and Mirrors
This supposed documentary is in reality a biased screed pitching simplistic young earth creationism to uninformed Christians or else to reinforce the biased beliefs of those who’ve already drank deeply from the Creationist Kool-Aid. Everyone else would be best served to stay away. The ‘science’ these dilettante ‘experts’ present is laughably imprecise, with the filmmakers wilfully omitting vast swathes of knowledge and skip over well established facts so that they can squeeze their religious views into the ever diminishing cracks of our scientific understanding. The upshot is that as we learn more and more the spaces for these people to squeeze their ‘god of the gaps’ into becomes ever more constricted and their efforts become progressively more desperate. Case in point, this ‘documentary’.
On one level it is fun to listen to the ramblings of these people much like it is to watch the ‘Beyond the Curve’ doc about flat-earthers and their contorted beliefs. However, the entertainment value of this film soon gives way to a feeling of something close to sympathy for these folks. It’s obvious Del Tacket has done quite a lot of reading on the sciences of Geology, Evolution, Biology, Paleontotogy, etc. because he does touch on a few pertinent questions, too bad then that he only does so in the most superficial manner to create the illusion of understanding these processes. And that is the point here. There is no interest in real verifiable science, all Tacket and Co are doing is cherry picking data to confirm their absurd creationist views. The fact that the experts flatly contradict each other’s claims seem to be completely lost on the filmmakers. Their claims go unchallenged and the films entire thesis becomes a wildly contradictive bag of tricks with no relevance to really understanding anything at all. All the uncritical viewer would come away with is a feeling that his biases (pro-creationist of course) has been somehow confirmed.
…and that’s the point. This doc is not supposed to inform or steer a critical viewer to do more research, it’s merely supposed to cast a ‘sciencey feel’ over the viewer so they can happily believe whatever they want. The fact that Tacket even dresses up in Carl Sagan’s iconic red turtle neck and tan jacket -a la Cosmos- to appear sciencey should serve as a glimpse into how far these folks would rely on smoke and mirrors go to flog their young earth views.
