When he realizes he’s suicidal, he checks himself into the psychiatric ward of a hospital, thinking they’ll do an observation, help him, and send him home in time for school the next day. Once in, however, he must stay for a week; the juvenile ward is being renovated, so he’s in with adults as well as a few youths. Bobby, a man with a young daughter, shows him around; Craig notices Noelle, about his age. He tries to keep his friends from finding out where he is. Little things: he draws, goes to therapy, sings, helps Bobby rehearse an interview. Is this the stuff of insight?

nothing stands out in this
There wasn’t anything that happens in this movie that stands out. It’s not really a comedy or drama and I didn’t find it entertaining. Even Zack G. didn’t do anything funny. It’s about a teen, Craig, whom is depressed and dreams about suicide. So, he goes to a mental ward and gets checked in for 5 days with all the adults because the teen ward is closed. He meets one girl his age he sort of makes friends with. Then there is Bobby whom has a kid and is in there for suicide attempts also. Craig meets a few other “off” characters. The main thing he does is make life easier for all the patients because he gets along with everyone and throws a pizza party on his last day. So, now you see why it was boring.
FINAL VERDICT: Skip it.
Adapted from Ned Vizzini’s 2006 novel of the same name, ‘It’s Kind Of A Funny Story’, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, is an average film, that entertains mildly, and rather leaves more than half of the questions it raises unanswered.
‘It’s Kind Of A Funny’ is about a 16-year-old depressed kid, who goes to a psychiatric hospital, to calm himself. Over-there he meets a bunch of people, who change his point of view towards life and happiness.
To give it’s due, the film does entertain at times. The sequences between the protagonist Keir Gilchrist and supporting actor Zach Galifianakis, are good. But the entertainment value is missing most of the time. Also, the culmination comes across as half-baked. The adapted screenplay doesn’t really offer the accurate answers, to the solid questions it raises. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s direction doesn’t impress much, as their writing isn’t very convincing.
Performance-Wise: Zach Galifianakis is superb, as expected. He delivers in every sequence. Keir Gilchrist does well. Emma Roberts doesn’t get much scope, yet she makes her presence felt. Zoë Kravitz is strictly okay. Viola Davis is effective, while Aasif Mandvi continues to act.
On the whole, It’s an Underwhleming Experience!
