Reviews:

A Magnificent Story About Friendship
Usually I’m not into these kinds of movies, but with the casting of Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman I had to see it. I’m really glad that I decided to give this a try.

The story is quite predictable, but I still enjoyed it. Never mind how impossible the storyline is because it is a great movie about friendship – how two men become great friends in a short time and help each other out throughout the time they are together. It moves along at a smooth pace and I never got bored, so the writer gets credit for that. The acting was top notch as Nicholson and Freeman draw forth the right emotion in the audience at the right time. The emotional parts are done just right, but the funny scenes are the best. I laughed throughout the movie but not as much as I would in a true comedy movie, but the comic scenes in this one really work and Nicholson is the “main man” in them. It does have a message at the end about how you should live your life to the fullest, how your family is important, and how you should be happy in life and the movie delivers that message perfectly.

Other than the predictable storyline and the sometimes cheesy dialog, the movie is great. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a feel-good movie.

8/10

The Bucket List
From director Rob Reiner (Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally, Misery), this sounded like a quite bleak but at the same time quite an interesting comedy, and I certainly wanted to see the two lead stars together. Basically Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) is a great cultural intellect, married for forty-five years with wife Virginia (Beverly Todd), with two songs and one daughter, and he is placed in hospital being treated for terminal cancer. There he meets and shares his room with bitter billionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson), who happens to own hospitals, he has had many divorces and has a missing daughter. In the days they spend in the hospital room together they get to know more about each other and become surprisingly close, and then Edward finds the list Carter threw in the bin. It is a “bucket list”, everything he has ever wanted to do before he kicks the bucket, and seeing how Edward has been given at least six months to live, he suggests to Carter to actually do these things. So with the help of Edward’s fortune, the pair travel the world to see the sights, sky dive, speed race in specific cars, and much more besides. For Carter though this list isn’t all the enjoyable stuff to do before dying, it is finding closure and redemption, such as helping Edward’s long lost daughter. Suddenly after a break-up by the two friends, Carter suffers a seizure and is rushed to hospital, with the cancer spreading to his brain, and he needs a possibly fatal operation, one that costs him his life. Edward carries out Carter’s last wish to reconnect with the long lost daughter, and then he carries out his funeral before being cremated, and Edward’s ashes join Carter’s at the top of a snowy mountain, where the last item is crossed off of the bucket list. Also starring Sean Hayes as Thomas, Alfonso Freeman, Morgan’s son as Roger Chambers, Rowena King as prostitute Angelica and Rob Morrow as Dr. Hollins. I can agree with the critics that this is filled with quite a lot of predictable moments, and the sentimental element is one of the most common things to expect, but with Nicholson and Freeman on screen together playing very engaging characters you can’t go wrong. Good!
