A beautiful story about right and wrong, and everything in between
This film tells the story of a married couple living in a remote lighthouse, who finds a drifting boat in the sea with a healthy baby and a dead man inside. They raise the baby as their own, but soon moral challenges arise and they find themselves at an important crossroad.
I’m impressed by how beautiful “The Light Between Oceans” is. The scenery is so beautiful that it makes me want to visit that place and feel its serenity. The pain of the couple and their reasons for making such a decision is well portrayed in the film, and I do feel for them for having live with the consequences of their wrongs. The story is really beautiful because it is a story of love, and paradoxically tells that sometimes the right thing to do may not be the right thing to do. It is so hard to determine what is right and what is wrong in this situation, thereby creating a conflict which keeps the film captivating. I’m deeply moved by both Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander’s performances. The film haunts me after it finishes, and I’m still affected by it and ruminating about it.
Light and love – and some hope
Not reading what a movie is about can be quite rewarding – like in this case. Of course I have seen quite a few movies that I probably shouldn’t have or where it would have made sense if I knew what was going on … but you can remedy the latter at least after watching a certain film.
So if you are already on a different information level than I was when I started watching this, you might see things a bit differently. Especially because some reviews or synopsis may reveal too much of the last third of the movie. It is way more rewarding experiencing it while you watch it. A love story that turns … not upside down, but at least does quite a few things and tells us quite a few things that I didn’t expect to say the least. Morally, emotionally and on many different levels the movie may touch you … it does raise questions that are not easy to answer. About guilt and about forgiveness too.
About what you think is morally ok or not. Because it is not that one side is “right” and the other is “wrong”. Although you may feel that way – but I would argue that the movie is way too complex for that. Maybe the drama inside this is not your cup of tea – that does not make it less of a great movie, with great performances … even if you may not like the first third of the movie that is quite sublime and subtle in its telling of its story … great actors and great cinematography too.
