A Good example of why some movies should better be left untouched
The Man from Earth is one of the most amazing movies ever, I mean there is no other movie of that kind, at least to my best knowledge, and more importantly the movie ended exactly how it should have, it was Perfect in every sense.
The Sequel was a good attempt to say the least but the acting and story itself was rather disappointing. The whole theme of the movie got somewhat disrupted, the original Man from earth was a complete scientific exploration on its own, there was a touch of mystery, facts, a classic debate over human existence and the Gods, where as the sequel was more centred towards John’s character, his personal life, and a bunch of school kids investigating his identity, no mystery, no debates, nothing new..viewers already know who and what John is.
So to conclude, its almost impossible to extend a movie like The Man from Earth, my expectations weren’t high to begin with but I watched it anyway hoping I will be proved wrong but of course that never happened. So, while I definitely appreciate the effort, I strongly believe that they should have left it where it ended.
Bad sequel to very interesting concept
First, this will contain a bit of a spoiler, it’s unavoidable for the evaluation of this movie.
Second, just to mention the first movie. The previous concept was a closed room with people talking. It was great. The closed atmosphere with highly intelligent people trying to figure out John Oldman was a great concept. Seeing part 2 to change this format was a little bit of a disappointment on its own.
Third, the new format had some great scenes, but overall it seemed a bit more hollow, shallow, full, without emotion or cleverness which was in the first movie. Spoiler alert! Chasing John to take a picture was just sad filler. The turn towards the discussion with the religious student was somewhat unexpected and somehow it did not fit. When the youngsters split up to pick the returning character of Art. Whole premise tried to add some artificial feeling of time pressure but was not done well. The conversation between John and the religious nut job student was like 50/50 between “great” and WTF was that. It’s hard to add some “what if” but ye, this kinda ruined it for me.
Four, the message of the movie. It still made me think. The whole movie is about man who does not age, but he start to age after 12 thousand years or so and seems like it’s a prequel to more philosophical finale about what is causing John finally feel the aging process. Something like “Jesus finally died for our sins”, and it could serve as alarm for those destroying this planet, that even John will die with the planet.
Anyway, i enjoyed the movie, even if it would make more sense for me to focus more on the internal struggle of the aging process of 12 thousand years old cave man, trying to figure out what went wrong or what’s going on, why now. I hope there will be a 3rd movie.
